Tranexamic Acid (TXA), a synthetic lysine derivative, was initially used in the clinic as an antifibrinolytic drug, which exerts hemostatic effects by inhibiting the activation of fibrinolytic zymogen and reducing the breakdown of fibrin. It was later found to also competitively inhibit tyrosinase activity and reduce melanin synthesis, while inhibiting vasodilation and inflammatory mediator release, which is remarkable in improving skin problems such as hyperpigmentation and redness.
In the cosmetic industry, the application of tranexamic acid mainly focuses on whitening and spot-reducing and soothing repair products:
Whitening: commonly used in serums, creams, masks and other products for chloasma, sun spots, hyperpigmentation and other problems, to help lighten existing spots, prevent the formation of new spots, brighten skin tone.
Soothing and repairing: Some sensitive skin or post-medical repair products will add tranexamic acid to utilize its property of inhibiting inflammatory reaction to relieve skin redness, burning and other discomforts, and assist in skin barrier repair.
